With lakefront views, mountain vistas, and scenic waterfall hikes, it’s no wonder why North Lake Tahoe is one of the most photogenic vacation destinations in the United States! If you’re hoping to capture some of the beautiful surroundings during your stay, we can help. Discover some of our favorite places for photography shots in North Lake Tahoe, as well as some general tips to help you take better photos.
How to Take a Great Photo
Whether you’re taking a photo from a cell phone or a DSLR camera, here are some easy things to keep in mind while photographing around Lake Tahoe:
- Take Your Time: One of the biggest mistakes someone can make when taking a photo is rushing it. When capturing a landscape or a beautiful sunset, be sure to take a second to make sure you’re framing the photo in the best way, the camera isn’t shaky or tilted, and that there’s nothing distracting in the background.
- Find the Right Light: While a sunny, cloudless day might make for a fun afternoon on the water, it’s not always the best time to take photos. Harsh lights create dark shadows and extreme highlights. Early-morning and late-afternoon tend to be when you find gentler light. This is especially important if you want to get a picture of the crystal-clear waters of North Lake Tahoe! Harsh light means more reflection on the surface, making it more difficult to see the features of the lakebed.
Where to Find the Perfect Photography Shots in North Lake Tahoe
If you’re looking for the perfect spot for Lake Tahoe landscape photography, we’ve got three suggestions below:
Kings Beach is a hip beach town with laid-back vibes and stunning vistas. You’ll find plenty of great opportunity for photos on the sandy beach. With mountains in the distance, pristine shoreline, and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tahoe, you’ll have no trouble finding an Instagram-worthy shot.
Eagle Falls Trail
The Eagle Falls Trail, which is on the west side of the lake, is a must for both hikers and shutterbugs alike. First thing’s first: you’ll need to fill out a wilderness permit before heading out on the trail. Trust us, though: the views on this trail are well worth the time spent filling out paperwork. Follow the maintained path from the parking lot at Emerald Bay State Park, about a one-mile hike, to get to the base of the falls. You’ll have plenty of opportunities for a great photo along your hike as well as at the base!
Another favorite beach in the area is Carnelian Bay. Like with Kings Beach, you’ll be treated to the sight of clear, blue water and craggy mountains in the distance. If you head to Waterman’s Landing, you’ll be able to rent a stand-up paddleboard and snap some great shots from on the lake. Plus, if you’re traveling with your four-legged friend, there’s a dog-friendly beach nearby. The shore is a bit rockier than some of the beaches, but it’s still a fun time for all!
